Electric mobility on Borkum

Electric mobility on Borkum

Already since the 1980s, the Stadtwerke Borkum, a segment of the Wirtschaftsbetriebe der Stadt NSHB Borkum GmbH work together with regional enterprises in the generation of renewable energy. Thereby, Borkum established its positive image as an island of competence for renewable energy.
Wind power stations in the harbour, an increasing number of photovoltaic systems on rooftops, the modern solar park on the premises of a waste boiler plant as well as vast offshore wind farms nearby, point to the outstanding role of Borkum in the energy transition. An energy production friendly climate and the actual application of renewable energies are being capitalized for many years, so that theoretically the island could be energy-self-sufficient.
Of course Borkum is also engaged in electric mobility and intends to promote it even more intensely in the future. With the acquisition of the new ”VW E-Up!” the first step to new thinking was accomplished.
The electric vehicle used by the Stadtwerke Borkum generally has an innovative technology, especially an innovative drive technology, and with a consumption of 11,7 kWh/100 km and 0g/km CO2-emission, it sets new efficiency standards in the road traffic on Borkum.
The Wirtschaftsbetriebe der Stadt NSHB Borkum GmbH feel particularly obliged to the basic idea of nature conservation and sustainability and believe, that the use of electrically powered systems, especially in the area of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site Wadden Sea, is just the right signal towards the topics tourism and energy on Borkum.
