30 – 31 January: Fourth NETfficient partner meeting in Freiburg (Germany)

At the beginning of 2017, NETfficient project successfully started into its third year with a partner meeting in Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany). This fourth NETfficient partner meeting was hosted by partner Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) on its premises.

Within two days of intensive collaboration and several internal workshops NETfficient partners finalised the design and development of the Energy Management Software and tools for its ICT Systems, one of the most essential parts of all five Use Cases (UC) and a pre-requisite for their implementation and demonstration.
In Low Voltage (LV)-UC “Homes”, as one of the four LV- and one Medium Voltage (MV)-Use Cases that have been designed within NETfficient, first tests with Hydrogen Technology have been initiated. Paving the way for the actual implementation, also the conception phase and the installation plan have been completed and verified and service contracts for the UC volunteers have been drawn up. In parallel, more hardware components and devices are assembled and bit by bit shipped to Borkum.
Moreover, new partner ZIGOR RESEARCH&DEVELOPMENT (R&D unit of ZIGOR CORPORACIÓN) was officially introduced and welcomed by coordinator AYESA to NETfficient project consortium. Zigor R&D is a power electronic company in the sector of industrial battery chargers and renewable energies. For NETfficient it will mainly contribute to activities related to the integration of ICT systems and the design and development of communication systems that are key components of MV-Use Case “Peak Shaving and Participate in Ancillary Services in the Market” and the four LV-Use Cases. Regarding the MV-Use Case, Zigor takes the lead in procurement and testing of Ultracapacitors and developing and manufacturing of associated power electronics. Zigor it is also strongly engaged in the conception, design, development and testing of the LV-storage systems to be integrated in the LV use cases.

As the meeting took place at the largest solar research institute in Europe, the consortium was invited to visit partner Fraunhofer ISE’s premises in Freiburg. There Fraunhofer operates 16 service laboratories (including six accredited testing or calibration laboratories) that cover a wide range of research fields strongly related to NETfficient.

Next to PV-laboratories, partners also explored some of the outdoor research areas e.g. a Hydrogen filling station for Electric Vehicles (see images 4-6).
