The island of Borkum opened its doors on 14th-15th June 2018 and allowed 20 interested guests from industry, press and politics a deeper insight into the NETfficient energy storage solutions.
Among numerous presentations by NETfficient speakers on the background of the project and the different technologies, the focus was laid on first hand experiences on Li-ion batteries, inverters, heat pumps, solar modules, hydrogen storage and ultracapacitors. They are installed in different homes and buildings throughout the island as well as at the Borkum Aquarium.
NETfficient energy storage technologies and systems are installed in 40 private houses, 5 buildings, the borkum aquarium and are part of the street lights on Borkum. All private houses are fully equipped with energy generation units, smart meters and energy storages. Among these 32 houses are equipped with li-ion batteries, 4 houses with li-ion batteries in combination with ultracaps and 4 houses use second life E-car batteries for energy storage.
An opportunity for further discussions between participants and the NETfficient partners Ayesa, Zigor, Santander, Stadtwerke Borkum, PowerTech Systems, Vandenborre Energy Systems, Steinbeis-Europa-Zentrum and Schneider Electric was given at a joint dinner in a wonderful ambience of a seaside hotel.
Keen attention by the press attracted Klaas Bakker. He is one of 40 households that use intelligent energy management systems to either store electricity from a photovoltaic system in batteries or feed it into the grid. During the 2-days study visit Klaas gave several interviews and faced the many questions coming from the Croation and Spanish journalists. Moreover, all participants were invited to inspect the installed energy storage system in his house.
Our special thanks goes to the NETfficient partner “Stadtwerke Borkum”. With their great effort Olaf Look, Grid Manager and Supervisor, and Gerhard Begemann, Energy Consulting, made an exciting study visit possible for all participants.
