NETfficient’s mission and vision

NETfficient's objectives:

With the increasing importance for the energy transition in Europe, it is necessary to find new solutions how dependency from fossil fuels and CO2 emissions can be overcome. It is NETfficient’s target as lighthouse project to enable the exploitation of existing renewable energies on Borkum island at any time by developing the missing link for mass uptake of storage and energy management technologies. This means that clean, sustainable energy will be stored in the island’s electric grid when it is available, and distributed in a later point in time, when there is an energy demand for it.

We believe it’s time to:

  • Produce and consume: The decentralised energy generation coupled with storage systems and a smart energy platform will empower citizens and businesses to become active prosumers, which means that all stakeholder groups, from policy makers, municipalities to the citizens will be involved in the energy value chain for a better living and working environment

  • Connect energy data: Being connected to the electric grid and fed by real time data and information, the smart energy platform will allow an efficient smart grid management including peak shaving.

Hence , NETfficient aims to develop solutions for small towns, big cities and isolated and low connected areas in a feasible and financially viable way. It will provide a complete sample of a Smart Energy City where the main “use cases” can be transferred to any smart city.

The project will use current state-of-the-art technologies, and further optimize them regarding their interaction and system intelligence. As a consequence, NETfficient will contribute specifically to Borkum’s goal of a self-sufficient energy supply until 2020.
The project NETfficient will demonstrate and deploy local storage technologies in a real electrical grid on Borkum Island, and will develop ICT tools to exploit the synergies between them, the smart grid and the citizens.

In summary, the objectives of NETfficient are to:

  • Develop and test in a real environment use cases of energy storage systems with a high replicability and with profitable business cases for all the stakeholders;

  • Develop a central Energy Monitoring System to be used by the energy companies;

  • Strengthen the management of the distribution grid (DSO) by providing control systems to integrate management and decision support tools that enable the integration of renewable generation and storage systems into grid;

  • Advance state-of-the-art storage solutions;

  • Showing potential users and customers how the portion of renewable energy could be increased by smart storage and grid management and thereby saving CO2 emission and money through the solution of the NETfficient project;

  • Make proposals in the social and economic areas to regulators in order to lower barriers to the deployment of distributed storage;

  • Facilitate the transition to renewable energies, overcoming the reliance on fossil energy, reducing CO2 emissions and bringing forward the energy transition in Europe and worldwide.
